Bob Parsons: A role model for Entrepreneur Moms? If you know who Bob Parsons is, you’re probably wondering why I would think he a great role model for entrepreneur mothers. During Super Bowl XXXIX, his company aired a commercial featuring a scantily-clad woman whose clothing just couldn’t stay on. The commercial was scheduled to air twice, but due to complaints, was pulled by Fox. Obviously, it’s not his view on the subject of female objectification that we think moms should emulate. It is his originality and business sense that we can learn from. Bob Parsons is the CEO of the domain registrar and web hosting company GoDaddy.com. Go Daddy has become the largest ICANN-accredited registrar and the only registrar to ever surpass Network Solutions in total domain names registered (Wikipedia.org). In other words, you’ve probably bought something from him. What can you learn from Bob Parsons? 1.Give your business some personality. How many CEO’s have a separate blog (bobparsons.com) and radio show that attracts hoards of people everyday? Bob does. Why? It’s because he’s developed rapport with his customers by making GoDaddy.com come alive through branding. When you go to most hosting sites, you don’t get a mental image of what the CEO looks like and/or stands for. Bob has come out from behind the corporate curtain and give us a sense of who he is. People are emotional creatures and thrive on connections. Give your customers more than a sterile experience. How can you give them a peek of your personality every time they visit?
|
2. Don’t be afraid of being different. It only takes a few minutes of doing research; cruising his website or listening to his podcasts, to figure out that Bob isn’t your average CEO. While most corporate types would use an image of themselves in a suit and tie shaking someone’s hand, for their website, Bob’s chose a photo with an earring Of course this is one of the many ways that Bob has marched to the beat of his own very alternative drum. Staying consistently true to his image and persona is what has set him apart on the business stage. Of course his success is what gave him his platform, but you don’t see me writing a piece about Alan Mulally. Who is Alan Mullally? Exactly. There are a gazillion websites, retail stores, and other black holes for people to spend their money. Stand out. Bunmi Zalob, Founder

You’ve got to look for a gap, where competitors in a market have grown lazy and lost contact with the readers or the viewers. When you’re the first person whose beliefs are different from what everyone else believes, you’re basically saying, “I’m right, and everyone else is wrong.” That’s a very unpleasant position to be in. It’s at once exhilarating and at the same time an invitation to be attacked. Think not of yourself as the architect of your career but as the sculptor. Expect to have to do a lot of hard hammering and chiseling and scraping and polishing. |
Sometimes the situation is only a problem because it is looked at in a certain way. Looked at in another way, the right course of action may be so obvious that the problem no longer exists. In all realms of life it takes courage to stretch your limits, express your power, and fulfill your potential, it’s no different in the financial realm. |

I think if you look at people, whether in business or government, who haven’t had any moral compass, who’ve just changed to say whatever they thought the popular thing was, in the end they’re losers. The price of greatness is responsibility. If you work just for money, you’ll never make it, but if you love what you’re doing and you always put the customer first, success will be yours. The only society that works today is also one founded on mutual respect, on a recognition that we have a responsibility collectively and individually, to help each other on the basis of each other’s equal worth. A selfish society is a contradiction in terms. If service is the rent you pay for your existence on this earth, are you behind in your rent? |
My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment. Next to doing the right thing, the most important thing is to let people know you are doing the right thing. Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose. Everybody makes business mistakes. I mean, I take the responsibility, and I did. I was the captain of the ship and I took that responsibility. |

Concentration can be cultivated. One can learn to exercise will power, discipline one’s body and train one’s mind. You are what you are and where you are because of what has gone into your mind. You can change what you are and where you are by changing what goes into your mind. Take the pains required to become what you want to become, or you might end up becoming something you to change but whether we are changing fast enough. The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man. A corporation is a living organism; it has to continue to shed its skin. Methods have to change. Focus has to change. Values have to change. The sum total of those changes is transformation. |
It was our duty to expand. Those who cannot or will not join us are to be pitied. What we want to do, we can do and will do, together. A glorious future! For years I have made the point that progress in winding back economic slack is made not by high growth in any individual year, but by maintaining an expansion over a sustained period. My philosophy is that life is all about learning and growing, and that life can be a real adventure of learning, growing, compassion, and joyfulness. I think that our fundamental belief is that for us growth is a way of life and we have to grow at all times. |

The organizational architecture is really that a centipede walks on hundred legs and one or two don We can talk about sales growth, profit growth, asset growth, but all of this probably will not happen without personal growth. We started Yahoo in about April 1994. It started out as a way for us to keep track of things that we were interested in. David Filo It’s pretty incredible to look back 30 years to when Microsoft was starting and realize how work has been transformed. We’re finally getting close to what I call the digital workstyle. Like most business people, I want every aspect of my business to be perfect. I know that this goal is unachievable, but it is nevertheless what I strive to achieve. I wanted to be an editor or a journalist, I wasn’t really interested in being an entrepreneur, but I soon found I had to become an entrepreneur in order to keep my magazine going. Actually I did not invent the seven habits, they are universal principles and most of what I wrote about is just common sense. I am embarrassed when people talk about the Covey Habits, and dislike the idea of being some sort of guru. The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. I consider my ability to arouse enthusiasm among men the greatest asset I possess. The way to develop the best that is in a man is by appreciation and encouragement.

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve. Your income is a direct reward for the quality and quantity of the services you render to your world. Whatever field you are in, if you want to double your income, you simply have to double the quality and quantity of what you do for that income. Or you have to change activities and occupations so that what you are doing is worth twice as much. Though I am grateful for the blessings of wealth, it hasn’t changed who I am. My feet are still on the ground. I’m just wearing better shoes. Without an open-minded mind, you can never be a great success. It’s through curiosity and looking at opportunities in new ways that we’ve always mapped our path at Dell. There’s always an opportunity to make a difference. |
